WHAT YOU NEED
TO START

The minimum equipment and clothes required

To begin kendo practice all you need is a shinai (bamboo sword) and comfortable exercising clothes that allow you to move freely and that do not drag on the floor. We are always barefoot in the dojo.

In kendo we wear traditional practice clothing. The top piece is called a kendo-gi and bottoms are called hakama. You may wish to purchase this equipment right away but we suggest that you wait until you have practiced for one or two months or until Sensei recommends it.  To purchase any equipment, please visit one of the vendors listed here.

GETTING READY
TO WEAR ARMOR

The time it takes to be ready to wear full armor

The time it takes to be ready to wear full armor depends on how regularly you practice and how readily you learn the physical skills. Typically this varies from 2 to 4 months. Once you begin wearing armor there is no limit to how long you can keep practicing Kendo. Many people continue to practice well over the age of 80.
But the first step is to visit the dojo for the first time. After that it is simply a matter of practice.
